What is Nisab
Nisab is the minimum amount that a Muslim must have before they have to give Zakah. Nisab was set in gold and silver by our Prophet Muhammed ﷺ. We no longer use silver or gold as a currency, so we need to exchange the value set into our currency.
Contemporary scholars differ in converting the weights for gold and silver given in Hadith into a modern measure, i.e. grams. Hence, we provide a range of options to calculate Nisab.
The table below gives you the weight in grams used to calculate Nisab by a number of scholars, for both gold and silver.
Nisab Calculation Opinion | Gold (Grams) | Silver (Grams) |
---|---|---|
Shaykh Samer Al-Nass | 85g | 595g |
Subcontinent Scholars | 87.48g | 612.36g |
Shaykh Mazin Bakir | 100g | 700g |
Nisab changes based on the value of gold or silver, our Nisab calculator uses historic gold and silver prices, converts it into monetary value using the Nisab calculation opinions in the table above, giving you the ability to calculate historic Nisab.
This is useful for working out Nisab for previous years where zakat has not been paid.
